How Do Magnetic Earrings Work?
A magnetic earring is two pieces: the front (the stone) and a small magnet that sits behind the earlobe. They snap together through the lobe and hold with a strong magnet — no piercing, no needle, no healing time.
Ours mirror our pierced studs exactly: the same D-color moissanite or CZ, the same halo and prong settings. From the front, no one can tell it isn’t pierced.
Are They Safe — and Do They Hurt?
Safe: magnetic earrings don’t break the skin, so there’s no piercing infection risk. Our magnets are enclosed in nickel-free stainless steel or 925 silver — friendly to sensitive ears.
Comfortable: a correctly-sized magnet grips firmly without pinching. For all-day wear, take them off overnight (as with any earring) so the lobe rests.
Will They Fall Off?
Properly matched magnets hold through a normal day — walking, working, commuting. The trick is magnet strength vs. lobe thickness: our studs use graded magnets so the hold is firm without discomfort.
For very active wear (sport, dancing) or thicker lobes, size up the magnet strength or choose a clip-on style.
What magnetic-earring buyers chose in the last 12 months
From 407 FITINY orders containing 433 magnetic earrings, September 2025 to September 2026. Use it to pick a size and material the way most people do, or to deliberately go the other way.
| Choice | Share of pairs sold | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 6 mm stone | 52% | The default for women and most men: reads as a classic stud, sits flat |
| 8 mm stone | 24% | Chosen mostly by men and for a bolder look; needs the standard magnet, not the small one |
| 6.5 mm moissanite (1 ct look) | 22% | The S925 moissanite line; picked when sparkle matters more than price |
| Stainless steel | 76% | Nickel-safe 316L, no tarnish, lowest price; the everyday choice |
| 925 sterling silver | 21% | Chosen for moissanite settings and gifting; needs occasional polishing |
| CZ stone | 78% | Clear or colored cubic zirconia, including halo settings |
| Moissanite stone | 21% | D-color VVS1, more fire than CZ, holds its brightness for years |
| Black, white, gold finish | 79% of colored picks | Black 33%, white 29%, gold 17%; pink and blue are the next two |
Counts are units, not orders. Percentages for size and finish are of pairs where that option was recorded.
Stainless steel vs sterling silver vs plated brass
The three metals magnetic earrings are made from. We sell the first two; the third is what most sub-$5 pairs on marketplaces use, so it is here for comparison.
| 316L stainless steel | 925 sterling silver | Plated brass (not sold here) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nickel exposure | Nickel is locked in the alloy; passes EU nickel-release limits | Nickel-free by definition (92.5% silver, copper balance) | Often nickel-plated under the color; the usual cause of itchy ears |
| Tarnish | None in normal wear | Can darken over months; wipes off with a cloth | Green or dark marks on skin once plating wears |
| Weight per stud | About 1 g | About 1.2 g | About 0.8 g |
| Plating life | Colored finishes (black, gold) 6 to 12 months of daily wear | 18K gold or platinum plating 12 months or more with care | Weeks to a few months |
| Price on FITINY | $6 to $20 per pair | $15 to $40 per pair | — |
| Best for | Daily wear, gym, men, first pair | Moissanite settings, gifts, sensitive ears that react to steel | — |
Stainless grade and silver stamp are stated on every product page. Plating life depends on sweat, perfume and how often the pair is worn.
Which magnet size for which ear
A magnetic stud is two pieces: the stone front and a small back magnet that grips through the lobe. The hold depends on lobe thickness and magnet grade more than on stone size.
| Lobe | Magnet to choose | Expected hold | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin lobe (most women, teens) | Standard 5 mm back magnet | All day: walking, commuting, desk work | Choosing the strongest magnet; it pinches and leaves a mark |
| Average lobe | Standard 5 mm back magnet | All day, including light sport | Wearing the pair to sleep; the lobe gets sore and the magnet can slip |
| Thick lobe (many men) | Larger 6 mm back magnet or an 8 mm stone with the strong magnet | All day; still take off for contact sport | Buying a 6 mm stud with the small magnet and blaming the earring |
| Previously stretched or pierced lobe | Standard magnet placed above the old hole | Normal hold; the magnet must sit on solid tissue | Centering the magnet on the old piercing where the tissue is thin |
If a pair falls off, the fix is almost always position or magnet size, not a stronger stone. If it pinches, size the magnet down or move it a millimeter toward the edge of the lobe.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are magnetic earrings safe?
Yes. They don’t pierce the skin, so there’s no infection or healing risk. Our magnets are sealed in nickel-free stainless steel or 925 sterling silver, so even sensitive and previously-reactive ears wear them comfortably.
Do magnetic earrings hurt?
No — a properly-sized magnet grips firmly without pinching. If a pair ever feels too tight, it’s a magnet-strength mismatch for your lobe thickness; sizing down the magnet fixes it. Take them off overnight to rest the lobe, as with any earring.
Do magnetic earrings fall off easily?
Not when the magnet is matched to your lobe. Ours use graded magnets that hold through a normal day of walking, working and commuting. For sport or thicker lobes, choose a stronger magnet or a clip-on style.
How do magnetic earrings work?
Two pieces — the stone front and a magnet back — snap together through the earlobe and hold by magnetism. No piercing, no needle, no healing time. From the front they look identical to a pierced stud.
Can you wear magnetic earrings on unpierced ears?
Yes — that’s exactly what they’re for. They give you real moissanite or CZ sparkle with zero piercing, so unpierced ears (or healed-over piercings) get the same look as a stud.
Can men wear magnetic earrings?
Absolutely. Our magnetic studs come in 6mm and 8mm and unisex round/square halo styles — a popular no-commitment option for men who want the look without a piercing.
