How to Choose an Engagement Ring Under $200 Without Regretting It
Under $200 buys a real, certified stone in a real precious metal if you choose moissanite in 925 sterling silver. It does not buy a diamond or solid gold. This guide shows what you get at each price step, what to check before ordering, and where the budget is better spent.
What $200 buys in 2026
| Stone and metal | What $200 gets |
|---|---|
| Moissanite, S925 gold-plated | 1 to 2 ct D-color VVS1 center, halo or pavé band, certificate card |
| Lab-grown diamond, S925 | About 0.3 ct, usually lower color and clarity |
| Lab-grown diamond, 10K gold | Not available at this price with a certified stone |
| Natural diamond | A melee stone under 0.1 ct |
Moissanite is a lab-created silicon carbide gem. It has more fire than diamond (dispersion 0.104 vs 0.044), scores 9.25 on the Mohs scale, and does not cloud. It is not a diamond and is not priced as one; that is why the stone you get under $200 is large.
Under $100 vs under $200
The stone grade is the same at every price on our site: D-color VVS1. What changes is size and setting work. Under $100 gets a 0.5 to 1 ct solitaire or a slim pavé band. Under $200 adds 2 ct centers, hidden halos, full-eternity pavé and two-ring bridal sets. If the ring is a stand-in while a custom ring is made, a placeholder ring under $50 does the job.
Six things to check before you order
- Metal stamp. Look for "S925" or "925" in the listing. Plated brass is not sterling silver.
- Plating. 18K gold, white gold or platinum plating over S925 lasts a year or more with normal care; rhodium or platinum plating stays white longest.
- Stone grade. D-color VVS1 is the top grade for moissanite. Ask for the certificate.
- Size. Measure a ring that already fits, or use a printable sizer. Adjustable bands remove the risk.
- Setting height. A low or bezel setting survives gym and work; a high cathedral setting catches.
- Return window. Read it before, not after.
Where the budget is better spent
Do not pay for a bigger center stone if you wear rings all day; pay for a lower setting and a plating that matches your other jewelry. A 1 ct round in a bezel wears better than a 2 ct in six prongs. Match the band to the wedding band you plan to buy so the two sit flush.
