What Is a Placeholder Engagement Ring, and When Do You Need One?
A placeholder engagement ring is a temporary ring used to propose with, or worn in place of the final ring while it is being made, resized, insured or kept safe. It is usually inexpensive, looks like the real thing in photos, and is chosen so the proposal does not have to wait for the custom ring.
When people use a placeholder ring
- Proposing before the final ring exists. Custom and resized rings take four to eight weeks. A placeholder lets you propose on the date you planned and choose the final ring together.
- Letting your partner choose. Many couples now pick the permanent ring together after the proposal.
- Travel, beach and gym. A gold ring with a large stone stays in the safe; the placeholder goes on the trip.
- Work. Gloves, equipment and frequent hand-washing are hard on a high-set stone.
- Insurance and repair gaps. While the real ring is at the jeweler, the finger does not have to be bare.

A placeholder stands in for an engagement ring that is coming. A promise ring is its own commitment with no engagement attached. Both are inexpensive, but the placeholder is usually a solitaire that mimics an engagement ring; the promise ring is often a band or a small accent stone.
