Showering in stainless steel magnetic earrings is fine; sleeping in any magnetic earring is not recommended. Water does not harm the magnet or the steel. Eight hours of pillow pressure does harm the lobe, and it is the most common cause of soreness people blame on the magnet.

Shower, pool, sea, gym

Situation Stainless steel Sterling silver What to do after
Shower Fine Fine Pat dry; do not leave wet in a bag
Pool (chlorine) Fine occasionally Plating dulls faster Rinse in fresh water
Sea Fine occasionally Silver darkens faster Rinse and dry the same day
Gym and sweat Fine Fine; wipe the plating Wipe with a dry cloth; sweat is salt water
Sleep Not recommended Not recommended Take off; the lobe needs the rest

Why not sleep in them

The magnet grips the lobe all night while the pillow pushes the stone sideways. The result is a sore, sometimes bruised lobe by morning, and a magnet that has slid to a thinner spot and falls off when you get up. Take them off like any stud.

The two-minute routine

  • Wipe both halves with a dry cloth at night.
  • Store the pair with the magnets snapped together so they do not attract dust and keys.
  • Once a month, a drop of dish soap and warm water, then dry.
