Magnetic Earring Strength Guide: Which Magnet Size Holds Without Pinching
The right magnet is the smallest one that holds through your day. A magnetic stud grips the lobe between the stone front and a back magnet; too weak and it slips, too strong and it pinches and leaves a mark. Lobe thickness decides which, not stone size.
How the hold works
Both halves contain a small neodymium magnet, usually 4 to 6 mm across. Hold strength rises with magnet size and drops sharply with lobe thickness, because the two magnets are further apart. That is why a thick lobe needs the larger back magnet, and a thin lobe is happier with the standard one.
Which magnet for which lobe
| Lobe | Choose | Expected hold | What goes wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin (most women, teens) | Standard 5 mm back magnet | All day at a desk, walking, commuting | Strongest magnet pinches and marks |
| Average | Standard 5 mm | All day including light sport | Sleeping in them makes the lobe sore |
| Thick (many men) | 6 mm back magnet, or 8 mm stud with strong magnet | All day; remove for contact sport | Small magnet on a thick lobe slips |
| Old piercing or stretched | Standard, placed above the hole | Normal | Magnet centered on thin scar tissue |
What buyers actually pick
Across 433 magnetic pairs we sold in the last twelve months, 52% were 6 mm studs, 24% were 8 mm and 22% were the 6.5 mm moissanite studs. 8 mm buyers are mostly men, and they are also the group most likely to need the larger back magnet.
Signs your magnet is wrong
- A red ring or dent after two hours: too strong, size down or move it toward the edge of the lobe.
- Slips when you pull a shirt over your head: too weak or placed on thin tissue.
- Fine at breakfast, gone by lunch: the lobe warmed and thinned slightly; a stronger magnet or a higher position fixes it.
