What Is a Promise Ring? Meaning, Which Hand, and What to Spend
A promise ring is a ring given to mark a commitment that is not yet an engagement. It can mean "we are serious", "I will propose when the time is right", or a promise you make to yourself. Unlike an engagement ring it carries no wedding date, so it is usually smaller, simpler and worn on either hand.
What a promise ring means
The meaning is set by the two people, not by tradition. The three most common are a pre-engagement promise between partners who are not ready to marry, a commitment ring in a long-distance or young relationship, and a purity or personal promise ring a person buys for themselves. Say the meaning out loud when you give it; the ring does not explain itself.

Which hand and finger
There is no rule. Most people wear a promise ring on the right ring finger, or on the left ring finger if they want it to read as "taken". When an engagement ring arrives, the promise ring moves to the right hand or becomes a stacking ring above the wedding band.
What to spend
A promise ring should not compete with the engagement ring that may follow. How to choose one
- Pick a style that stacks: a slim solitaire or a plain band will still work next to a future engagement ring.
- Check the size the same way you would for any ring; most of our promise rings come in US 5 to 10 and several are adjustable.
- Choose the stone honestly. Moissanite is a lab-created gem with more fire than diamond and a 9.25 Mohs hardness; it is not a diamond and should not be sold as one.
